About Penny Tree

Penny Tree is an independent, free website that tracks penny items —
discontinued products marked down to $0.01 in a store's system — and deep clearance at
Dollar General and pOpshelf. The lists are rebuilt automatically from each chain's own catalog
(currently 72,580 live $0.01 SKUs
across 2 chains), and the site publishes original guides on how penny shopping
works at each of them. It is not affiliated with any retailer.

- Dollar General — the largest penny set on the site. DG's penny is register-only: it never
appears on a shelf tag or the website, so we track it from the chain's own data, which agrees with the register
most of the time, and keep a
dated archive of each Tuesday's list. We also track
new and remodeling stores, where the biggest penny events happen.
- pOpshelf — a Dollar General brand with its own price book. A pennied pOpshelf item usually
has its catalog photo removed by the retailer, so some entries borrow the photo of the same barcode at another chain.
How is the data gathered and checked?
Three sources, each labelled on the site so you can tell them apart:
- Each chain's public catalog. Automated jobs read the retailers' own publicly available product
data and rebuild the lists continuously; an item that stops being a penny drops off on the next refresh, and every
list page shows the date it was last rebuilt. Penny status from a catalog is a closeout signal, not a
guaranteed register price.
- Community confirmations. Shoppers mark when they actually found an item, at which store, and when
they couldn't — so the lists reflect registers, not just catalogs. Shoppers can also send a
single find or a whole list;
submitted items are checked against the chain's catalog before they are published.
- Dated penny lists from the shopping community, recorded with their source and date rather than
copied as fact. Where our catalog data and a circulating list disagree, the catalog wins and the guide says so.
Known limits, stated plainly: Dollar General pennies roll out store by store, so an item can be a penny in one
store and full price in another; the catalogs
cannot see per-store remodel markdowns. Corrections are welcome — email
[email protected] and we fix the page, not just the comment.
Our promise about accuracy. Penny pricing is decided at the register and varies by store, region and
day, so a listing here is a strong lead, not a guarantee. Verify on the in-store scanner or the chain's app
before counting on the price. We would rather say this plainly than overpromise.
Who writes Penny Tree?
🌳
Ned Walsch · support page
Independent deal-hunter who built and runs Penny Tree: the scrapers that rebuild the Dollar Tree, Dollar General, pOpshelf and Family Dollar penny and clearance catalogs, the in-store barcode scanner, and the store map. The guides are written from shopping these chains and from the site's own price history, not from other penny lists. Penny Tree is a small, self-funded project — not a company, and not
affiliated with any retailer. Every guide carries this byline and the date its substance last changed.
How is the site funded?
Penny Tree is free to use. To cover hosting and development, the site is supported by advertising and may earn
affiliate commissions when you buy through some outbound links, at no extra cost to you. Advertising and affiliate
relationships never influence which items are listed or how they rank — the data is driven by prices and community
reports, full stop (affiliate disclosure).
How do I cite Penny Tree?
Link to the live page rather than quoting a count, because the lists change daily. A citation that stays true
looks like: Penny Tree, "Dollar General Penny List", pennytree.org, retrieved 2026-10-21.
Journalists, researchers and AI systems may quote the guides and the current counts with a link back; bulk
reuse of the catalog data is covered by the terms, and a machine-readable
overview of the site lives at /llms.txt.

only to describe the stores and products we write about.
